چکیده

Collimation of the multi-MW beams in present linear collider designs is a critical issue. Graphite as a possible collimator material exhibits good mechanical properties but a rather poor electrical conductivity. The resulting resistive wakefields can potentially deteriorate the beam quality. The knowledge of strength and scalings of such wakefields is essential for the design of the collimation systems in linear colliders. We present measurements of the self induced wakefield kick that a charged particle beam experiences when it passes through a narrow gap of two graphite collimator jaws. The measurements where performed with the highly damped SLC beam at an energy of 1.19 GeV. The results are compared to theoretical predictions and to measurements with copper collimators of the same shape.

Collimator Wake Fields in the Slc Final Focus*

The SLC final-focus system accommodates 29 fixed or adjustable collimators for machine protection and background reduction. By amplifying pulse-to-pulse orbit variations and by generating emittance growth, collimator wake fields may degrade the beam quality at the interaction point (IP). In the SLC final focus, collimator halfapertures are larger than the bunch length, so that the standard coll...

Detection of Beam Induced Dipole-Mode Signals in the SLC S-Band Structures*

Beam emittance dilution caused by wakefield effects is one of the important issues in the SLC linac. The detection of beam induced dipole mode signals in the C.. band range could provide a direct measure of the strength of transverse wakefield kicks the beam experiences in the accelerating structures. We investigate the applicability of these microwave signals for beam steering purposes. The RF...

Measurements of Collimator Wakefields at End Station A*

The angular deflection of a 28.5 GeV electron beam passing off-axis between the jaws of a collimator, generating a transverse wakefield, were measured in End Station A (ESA) at SLAC. In total, fifteen different configurations of collimator geometry and material were tested: some were chosen for compatibility with previous measurements while others served to study the effect of geometry and tape...

Improvements in Emittance Wakefield Optimization for the Slac Linear Collider

The transverse emittances in the SLAC Linear Collider can be severely diluted by collective wakefield effects and dispersion. For the 1997/98 SLC/SLD run important changes were implemented in the way the emittance is optimized. Early in the linac, where the energy spread is large due to BNS damping, the emittance growth is dominated by dispersion. In this regime emittance tuning bumps may intro...

Super-ASSET: A Technique for Measuring and Correcting Accelerator Structure Misalignments at the SLC

Transverse wakefield kicks from misaligned accelerating structures in the SLC linac contribute significantly to emittance growth. If these kicks could be measured directly, it would be possible to align and/or steer the beam to a kick-free trajectory. In the Accelerator Structure Test Facility at SLAC, ASSET [1], the kicks due to a drive bunch are measured with a witness bunch at varying bunch ...
